The green belt movement

In light of our current gendered environmental crisis, this article offers a historical exploration of how the Green Belt Movement (GBM)—an organization founded in Kenya in 1977—engaged in programs and advocacy to empower rural women and conserve the environment.

The Green Belt Movement is currently a global movement evolving in the United States, United Kingdom, West India, Japan, South America, and throughout Africa [4]. To date, the movement has led to the planting of more than 51 million trees [10]. In 2011, Maathai died of cancer at the age of 71.From environmental justice advocates to scientists and social entrepreneurs, here are just a handful of the many Black environmentalists who have contributed to our global understanding of the need to look after our planet. 1.
