Sombart was born in Ermsleben (Germany), the son of a well-to-do National Liberal member of the Prussian Diet. He studied economics, history, philosophy and law in Berlin, Pisa and Rome. In 1888 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin and became an officer of the Bremen chamber of commerce.
